Situated in the Library in the Deanery are two very striking paintings. They are two of the largest paintings created by the artist Leo Twiggs. He is the most influential African American artist working in the South. And South Carolina ETV has made a documentary about this extraordinary man and his life.
The journey of his life is riveting. One learns about his education from Claflin University, his MA degree from New York University, and his doctorate in art from the University of Georgia. One learns about his skilled work in Batik. And one learns how Virginia Theological Seminary gave Dr. Twiggs the highest honor that we can confer – the Dean’s Cross for Servant Leadership.
You can watch the documentary here. The entire program is excellent. However, if you are especially interested in the section where VTS is prominent, then you can start your viewing at minute 48.
The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
