The (possible) Future of the Church

Date: October 24, 2022

Our TryTank Experimental Lab has produced a short documentary about the future. They have used strategic foresight to determine three plausible scenarios for what the church might be like in 10 years. It is fascinating and sobering. When I first saw the film, I wondered what it would mean for our alumni in ministry and our students graduating into this future church.

The Rev Lorenzo Lebrija, TryTank’s executive director and our chief innovation officer, told me, “Our aim is for this film to act as a catalyst for conversation. We must have honest conversations about the church’s future now.” He’s right. The world is much different today than it was just ten years ago, and at the speed things are changing, it makes sense that it will be yet more changed in 2032. Ideally, this glimpse into plausible futures will encourage us to pay close attention to how the Holy Spirit is calling the church forward.

The film is available starting today at the TryTank website. While you are there, be sure to sign up for the monthly newsletter to stay up to date on their important work. I encourage you to see and share the film with others who might want to be in this conversation.

Our Historic Bicentenary is about the past to equip us for a faithful future.
