The Power Goes Out

Date: August 18, 2026

I am still not sure what exactly caused the electricity outage yesterday afternoon, but the power went out across the entire campus. No internet, no AC, no electricity.

It is worth pausing and explaining our protocols in such an eventuality. We start by asking facilities to reach out to Dominican Power to ascertain a likely timeline. If it is likely to be brief, then we will wait for the power to return. If it is going to be longer, then a senior member of the administration will decide whether to close the Seminary.

During an outage lasting hours, community members are encouraged to gather in Scott Lounge or the Refectory for heat or air-conditioning. Given the budget and meal preparation plans that our catering team works with, it is not possible to simply add apartment families to the numbers for evening meals. So, dinner service is still available for dorm residents and, just like Lesley and me, we invite apartment families to also have some meal options that do not require cooking.  If the outage (or weather event) is extended (i.e. more than 48 hours), then we do have plans for these scenarios which does involve support for families.

Fortunately, yesterday, power was restored by 4.30pm. Enjoy your AC everyone and say a prayer for those who are not so fortunate.
