The Retirement of Dr. Mitzi Budde

Date: March 1, 2024

Every time I walk into the Bishop Payne Library, I am grateful. Whenever I am working on a book project and find a footnote which references an article that I want to read, I find it in the library. It is a high-quality service: it is staffed by a fabulous team: and it has been led by an exceptional Head Librarian, namely, Dr. Mitzi Budde.

Dr. Budde has conveyed the news that she is retiring from this role at Virginia Theological Seminary in mid-July 2024. Subject to Board approval, we are hoping that she will take her much-deserved five-month sabbatical which was postponed from the fall of 2023 in August.

Dr. Budde arrived in 1991: she has served at VTS for 33 years. She is the holder of the Arthur Carl Lichtenberger Chair for Theological Research. She is the author and editor of several books and articles; and she served as the President of the North American Academy of Ecumenists (2013-2015). But, perhaps most important of all, her primary legacy is an exceptional library. Countless authors have expressed their debt of gratitude to Mitzi in their acknowledgements to their books. Everything from the renovations to the provision of library resources for The General Theological Seminary has been done with a professionalism and love for theological education that is compelling and impressive.

There will be ample time to celebrate Mitzi’s years. But for now, we simply say thank you. We are grateful for your presence in our midst.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary
