Life is puzzling. Here we all are – persons with the remarkable gift of consciousness who are able to laugh and love – living in this vast cosmos. The question at the heart of faith is this: why does all this exist? The Christian claim is that this universe is a result of intention and agency. At the heart of the universe is goodness and love, enabling everything that is and sustaining everything that is. Everything in creation is a result of this love. Now how do we know that this claim is true? The answer lies in the mystery of the babe at Bethlehem.
Christians believe that Jesus is the very embodiment of God, and by examining the words and deeds of Jesus of Nazareth we can learn about the nature and source of the universe. Jesus did not fall out of the sky fully developed. Instead, Jesus was born into the world as a baby. And from the moment Jesus was born, we can learn of God from that life. We know the Creator is loving because the life born in the manager in Bethlehem points to that love.
This Christmas, marvel afresh at the story of the Incarnation. And take some time this Christmastide to appreciate the miracle of living and life. Happy Christmas, everyone!
