The Service for the Mission of the Church

Date: May 6, 2026

Today has been a busy and purposeful day. The Board met to discuss the Strategic Plan for The General Theological Seminary and spent time in Executive Session with the search firm supporting the Dean and President search. These conversations reflect both careful planning and a hopeful vision for the future.

Tonight, we begin the journey toward Commencement. The Service for the Mission of the Church is one of my favorite moments in the Seminary calendar, capturing the heart of our shared calling. It reminds us why we do what we do and who we are called to be.

At the center of this service are the words, “Go ye into the world and preach the Gospel,” which shape the sending of every seminarian from VTS. This charge frames the meaning of all that follows. It provides a powerful lens through which to understand the joy and significance of Commencement tomorrow.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary.
