The start of a new academic year

Date: September 5, 2023

It is a beginning: it is a new start: we are turning the page in our journal. We are getting our pen ready to write. What shall we write? What sentences will capture the formation that God wants to do in our lives? How shall academic year 2023-24 unfold for us?

Welcome back. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the opening Eucharist at 8.15am. Classes start today. The summer break is now over: the hard graft of the fall semester now begins.

It is a very significant semester. In the same way that this institution has studied closely the marking of the centenary, we can be sure that others will look back at our work this semester. How did we mark two hundred years? It is a milestone. Let us enter this semester aware of the significance of the historical moment.

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and President of The General Theological Seminary
