Dr. Scott MacDougall, recently appointed as Director for Theological Resources for The Episcopal Church, joined up last night for a deanery evening to discuss his new role. Holding a Ph.D. from Fordham University and an M.A. from the General Theological Seminary, he brings a wealth of knowledge on ecclesiology and Anglican theology to support church programs and leadership.
During the evening, Dr. MacDougall movingly explained the importance of theological discourse in pastoral moments. He recounted a student’s question: “Why do the doctrines of transcendence and imminence matter when holding the hand of a dying person?” He illustrated how these doctrines frame the encounter, noting that transcendence reveals a moment made possible by the Love of eternity in the act of creation of everything that is and ever will be. Simultaneously, God’s imminence means God is right there, loving the very dying breath of that person.
It was lovely to have Scott with us, fostering deep reflection amid our ministry. His message proved especially appropriate as we journey through Holy Week, mirroring Christ’s transcendent love and immanent presence in suffering.
