Date: January 5, 2021

The General Ordination Examinations (GOEs) are upon us. Seniors gathered yesterday morning to start the first paper – Liturgy. They looked ready to do the work that they must do over the next few days.

It is important to remember all the basics of examination taking. Make sure you sleep well; ensure that you have found a comfortable seat with reliable WiFi; and please read the question, at least three times.

As I said to those taking the examinations yesterday, it is important to offer this moment to God. Pause at the beginning and acknowledge that this is a moment when you seek to offer your answers to God. GOEs bring anxiety. Dioceses treat the results in different ways; and inevitability, students would like to do as well as they can. This truly is a moment when we need to heed the words of Mother Julian: In the end “all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.”
