Date: October 6, 2020

Nine years ago (plus one month – it was September 9, 2011), we first opened Cafe 1823. I wrote in the Commentary, “Finally, this evening 1823 officially opens its doors.” Since then, many a conversation has been shared. Many prospective students have learned about VTS. Community has been served by this space. Last night, we had our first event on the new 1823 Terrace. It was the “Dean’s Welcome to New Students.” A group of students met with the Rev. Dr. Ruthanna Hooke, the Rev. Dr. Barney Hawkins, and me. We sat under the outdoor heaters and chatted. Community was being formed. If you have not seen the new Terrace, then please do take a look. Cafe 1823 opens on Wednesday; you can sit outside and have a beverage (and we serve the full range with plenty of attractive non-alcoholic options) and a meal. It will be open from 5pm to 10pm from Wednesday to Sunday. I am really grateful to all those who worked so hard to create this beautiful space. Thank you. The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D. Dean and President
