Visit of Mayor Gaskins

Date: April 24, 2026

The Dean and President, Ian Markham, met yesterday with Mayor Alyia Gaskins of Alexandria, Virginia, for a warm and constructive conversation. The meeting highlighted the longstanding relationship between Virginia Theological Seminary and the city it calls home. Both leaders reflected on the shared history and mutual investment in the flourishing of the local community.

Virginia Theological Seminary has deep roots in Alexandria, with longstanding partnerships that enrich both the institution and the city. From community engagement initiatives to shared civic and cultural commitments, the connections are both practical and deeply relational. There is a clear sense that the Seminary and the city thrive best when working in close collaboration.

This meeting was encouraged by Gabe Oakes, a student at VTS, whose initiative helped bring this connection to life. Gabe’s encouragement reflects the Seminary’s ongoing commitment to fostering meaningful relationships beyond its campus. There is genuine excitement about future opportunities to work together in ways that serve the common good of Alexandria.

The Very Rev Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
