In April 2012, I took over from Donzel Small and became Grounds Manager for Virginia Theological Seminary. Nine years and 4 months later, on Friday, July 23rd, I will be leaving to begin the next stage of my life as a Middle School Math Teacher.
When the most thoughtful manager someone can have, Dave Mutscheller, hired me, I had the pleasure of having Stuart Dahlinger, Victor Hurtado, and Kin Hoon in my department. Their willingness to help implement an organic, sustainable approach to campus management has greatly improved this beautiful campus. I have seen the campus go from being 30% bare to full vegetation. On a global scale, the campus has become a large carbon sink, thanks to the topsoil and new plantings created by all of our efforts.
I have also been fortunate enough to work with great students and staff in Cultivate VTS, as part-time employees and in simple day-to-day interactions. There are too many wonderful souls to mention in this post. You all have a special place in my heart. For those who have left and have taken their love of the earth to their new communities, I hope you will continue this work.
I am very proud of the accomplishments and all those who have helped improve the grounds and the planet, from our current leadership of Dean Markham and Jacqui Ballou and former leader Heather Zdancewicz, to all the facilities employees, to the staff over the years, and to everyone trying to lessen their carbon footprint, thank you and God bless! I will miss you all!
