Date: September 2, 2020

There is so much to celebrate in this season. One completely misreads our moment if one cannot see the grace and achievement which is all around us. Today I want to lift up one of our alums – the Rev. Lonnie Lacy ’06, who is a parish priest working in south Georgia. He created the video, “Dancing Priest Does Hamilton.” In addition to his beautiful singing, this is a lovely video captures both the pain of absence and the hope of regathering. It is a funny, lively, beautifully crafted video.  It went viral. It spoke to the moment. News outlets covered the story. As I watched the video, the message I heard was a simple one: be grateful for the divine gift of communion. We take this gift for granted, and when suddenly we are unable to enjoy the gift, we feel the gap. For all of us, there was a gap, even if dioceses are now slowly reopening and permitting the Eucharist. I am grateful for the way Lonnie conveyed that message. So thank you, Lonnie, for this gift to the Episcopal Church and to the world. We are grateful.  The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D. Dean and President
