Virginia Theological Seminary is delighted to welcome the Rev. Dr. Malcolm Brown as a Dean’s Scholar in Residence for six weeks. Dr. Brown has recently retired from his position as Director of Mission and Public Affairs for the Archbishops’ Council of the Church of England, where he led the Church’s engagement with public policy, ethics, and social issues. His previous roles include Principal of the Eastern Region Ministry Course in Cambridge and Executive Secretary of the William Temple Foundation in Manchester, following early ministry as a parish priest and industrial missioner in Kent and Southampton.
A noted theologian and author, Dr. Brown has written After the Market, The Church and Economic Life (with Paul Ballard), and Tensions in Christian Ethics. His academic work explores the relationship between faith, public life, and ethics, with current interests in artificial intelligence and technology. He also serves as Honorary Lecturer at the University of Bath and Visiting Professor at the University of Winchester.
We are proud to note that Dr. Brown was recently awarded an OBE in King Charles’s Birthday Honors for his service to the Church and public life. His time at VTS offers a rich opportunity to engage with questions of faith, society, and ethics. We warmly invite the community to welcome Dr. Brown and take the opportunity to learn from his deep experience and insight.
The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and the President of The General Theological Seminary
