Date: October 17, 2023
In today’s Commentary we are very fortunate to welcome a renowned Anglican leader and distinguished alum of Virginia Theological Seminary back to Alexandria as a CACS Sabbatical Fellow, the Rt. Rev. Dr. George Okoth, Bishop of the Diocese of Mara in the Anglican Church of Tanzania. Bishop Okoth arrived last week and it was a joy and entirely fitting to have him with us for the Bicentenary.
Bishop Okoth is a two-time graduate and three-time degree recipient from the Seminary, receiving a Master of Theological Studies in 2004, a Doctor of Ministry in 2013, and Doctor in Divinity, honoris causa, in 2017. In short, Bishop Okoth is a very dear friend of this place, and I am delighted that he will be spending the next few weeks with us.
Bishop Okoth will be spending his time on sabbatical in rest, in worship with our community, and in writing a book on prayer. He will also be giving a forum on Tuesday, October 31 from 12:45-1:45pm on “Current Topics in the Diocese of Mara.” If you register on the Eventbrite event page before October 24, CACS will provide a bagged lunch. On the last day of his time here, Monday, Nov. 6, we will have the opportunity to hear him preach.
Do take advantage of this wonderful chance to share fellowship with this Bishop, scholar, and follower of Jesus.
The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.
Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary & President of The General Theological Seminary
