Deep Calls to Deep

“Preaching is soul work … Strengthening preaching is not fundamentally about offering tips or teaching techniques, but about nourishing preachers for this challenging work.”

The Rev. Ruthanna Hooke, Ph.D.
Director, Deep Calls to Deep

About the Program

Deep Calls to Deep is no longer an operational program out of Lifelong Learning. Stay connected with us to learn more about our new preaching initiative, Compelling Preaching!

Deep Calls to Deep was a program to strengthen preaching using communities of peer groups to nurture pastors’ own spiritual, emotional, physical, and imaginative lives.

Each year DC2D supported six peer groups of six preachers, who met monthly to preach for each other, receive feedback, and support each other in the preaching vocation. Each peer group was mentored by a preaching guide, specifically chosen and trained to help build a sustainable community for long-term preaching formation.

Each summer, participants gathered on the VTS campus for a four-day residency, participating in formation through the core components of DC2D: community, imagination, spirituality, and embodiment.
