There is little surviving information now known about the woman named Sophy who was enslaved by the Washington family at Mount Vernon. Sophy was first enslaved by John Augustine Washington II and later his son, Washington III. In 1856, at the age of 25 she was hired out to Alexandria Theological Seminary (now Virginia Theological Seminary). Washington entered into a transaction with Charles H. Bland, who represented the Seminary. Said transaction arranged for Sophy to labor at the Seminary for some, as yet unknown, period of time. Details of Sophy’s life beyond these bare facts are as yet undiscovered.
