With the visit of the President of the United States last week, it meant that an important commentary was displaced. The Rev. Dr. Judy Fentress-Williams had asked for our librarians to be celebrated; after all, she explained, “It is Library Appreciation Week.”
So, slightly belatedly, I do want to pause and recognize the critical role that our librarians are playing on our campus. The library matters. This is the home where learning resides; this is a vehicle that ensures those who have worked hard in the past and agonized over this or that question can be heard; this is a primary mechanism in the passing on of knowledge.
I freely confess that I love the library. I love books on the shelf. I love finding a catalogue number and then browsing the section to find three other more suitable books. I marvel at the ease with which I can track down an article or a book review. And yes I really appreciate the email from Mitzi as she gently steers me away from ATLA and recommends EBSCO for current articles on the Church’s response to the pandemic. So, today, on behalf of us all, I say thank you. Thank you to all our librarians at the Bishop Payne Library at Virginia Theological Seminary.
