Join me in celebrating the appointment of the Rev. Altagracia Pérez-Bullard, Ph.D. as academic co-chair to the House of Bishops Committee on Theology. Her role as academic co-chair is to support the Rt. Rev. Allen Shin, bishop suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the newly appointed chair of the committee.
The House of Bishops Committee on Theology is appointed by the Presiding Bishop and serves as a resource to bishops as they pursue their teaching ministry in the church. The committee was formed under the leadership of Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold and has continued to work under the direction of consecutive presiding bishops. The committee studies issues facing the church and articulates a theology that is responsive to them, offering their work for discussion and adoption by the whole House of Bishops. This work of the Bishops is supported by academics, also appointed to the committee by the Presiding Bishop.
During Presiding Bishop Curry’s term, the committee began exploring a theology of Beloved Community that would undergird the church’s preaching and teaching. They sought to understand the obstacles to building Beloved Community, which in turn lead to a deep study of the issue of white supremacy. A paper has been prepared and adopted on this topic by the House of Bishops last year. Building on this work, the committee is now exploring the issue of reparations that is also being addressed by several dioceses, church communities, and institutions.
VTS is honored to have two faculty members appointed to this committee, as the Rev. Kate Sonderegger, Ph.D. also serves.
